Description

Sebsongs Rhythmatic is a fully featured drum machine with six analog drum voices derived from the classic CR-78. The available voices are Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Low Conga, Rim Shot, HiHat and Cymbal. Rhythmatic expands on the original in a number of ways, including offering adjustable tune and decay controls for the bass drum and snare, plus decay control for the cymbal.

Rhythmatic can be sequenced externally but also has its own built in sequencer, which offers 64 programmable drum patterns, up to 16 steps in length. The sequencer in Rhythmatic can be programmed in two ways, either using the buttons on the front panel, or by connecting the module via USB to a computer and using the online pattern editor.

Rhythmatic comes with 64 pre-programmed patterns, so you don’t always have to make your own to get started. The factory patterns contain many of the original CR-78 patterns plus pattern banks created by Sebsongs Modular, Konstantine and Salkinitzor. All factory patterns can also be edited and replaced with custom user patterns, and it’s possible to switch between patterns via CV. Each drum voice can also have its own sequence length, making it possible to create interesting polymetric sequences.

A key feature of Rhythmatic is the big knob in the top centre. This knob controls a random parameter, which either adds or subtracts steps from the pre-programmed patterns. The default position is 12 ‘o clock – If you want a more busy pattern, turn the knob clockwise, and if you want a more sparse pattern, turn it the other way. This parameter is a lot of fun for live performance and adding quick random fills on the fly. Holding the shift button turns the random knob into a 4 bar loop recorder, which will record pattern changes and movement on the random knob. Random amount can also be controlled via CV.

Each individual drum channel can be muted and unmuted for more quick pattern variations, and LEDs show the status of muted channels for clear visual feedback when performing. Below the mute buttons there is a configurable input/output for each of the voices. These jacks can be set as either: trigger inputs for each voice to trigger from an external sequencer,  or as trigger outputs – that will send triggers from the built- in sequencer. Each of the voice jack sockets can be set individually as either an input or an output.

Rhythmatic features internal swing per pattern and has clock and reset inputs for syncing to external clock sources. There are two audio outputs: output A contains the full mix of all 6 voices, but inserting a patch cable to output B splits the voices in half between the two outputs. All in all Rhythmatic offers a fresh twist on the classic sounds and rhythms of the CR78, with programmability and live performance features that make it a unique addition to any rack.
